OK, I admit I don't follow just one stat, but which stat do you check first...
You can have more then one first....you can have a team stat you check first for both batting and hitting, an individual batting stat, and an individual pitching stat that you always check for first.
Which stat do you check on most often?
Are there stats you check on when the team is doing well, and are there other stats you check on when the team is not doing well.

I have tended to look at the pitching stats (team-wise) the most closely. Those are the stats that slip through the cracks.
I already told you Alex that the Tribe's staff WHIP was really high and taht was what worried me. And it was primarily because of the walks, not the hits that was boosting the ratio. The thing is, they have avoided giving up extra base hits and keeping a low opp BA with RISP which ahs kept the runs down. I guess it just shows they have good stuff that the hitters aren't getting good wood on the hits, and that the hitters aren't giving in, thus the higher walks.

Dang, YTF beat me to it.
Next to that, the most significant stat for this team is going to be ERA. This is clearly going to be a team that lives and dies by pitching. Our W-L will only be as good as our team ERA.
Kind of takes me back to my teen years as a Mets fan, with Colon and Sabathia standing in for Seaver and Koosman. How many people predicted the 1969 Mets would win 100 games?

But in 1969, it was still a pitchers game...wasn't the mound higher off the ground in 1969.
The stat I would most like to follow is not kept!
Total runners moved over...TRMO....

Pitchers mound was lowered after the 1968 season. Also, umpires stopped calling the high strike in 1969 too -- at least according to pitchers who were active then.
IMHO, I rank the stats in order of importance thus:
1) Team Losses.
2) Team Wins.
3) Team Runs Allowed.
4) Team Runs Scored.
5) Team ERA.
6) Team OBA.
7) Individual Player's Win Shares.
8) Individual Pitcher's ERA+.
9) Individual Batter's Runs Created.
10) Individual Batter's OBA.
11) Individual Batter's Runs Produced (Runs + RBI)
